Saturday we visited Dr. Manuel Corachan and Jacqueline at their home in Masanas outside Barcelona. Manuel used to be senior consultant in Tropical Medicine at Hospital Clinic in Barcelona and is now an advisor at Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (CRESIB). Manuel and Jacqueline lived and worked many years in several countries in Africa. They gave us a lot of first-hand travel information and strongly recommended us to visit amongst other Maputo and Pemba in Mozambique and also Kruger National Park in South Africa. Discussing road conditions, he emphasized that it is not possible to plan based on the same distances we are used to due to local conditions make travel by car very difficult many places.

Regarding health precautions, Manuel simply advised us to avoid fresh salads, vaccinations before departure and to be extremely diligent with preventive malaria precautions and medication during our stay. He also gave us advice on what to do in case of symptoms of malaria and recommended us to visit his “center” at Hospital Clinic of Barcelona for all our vaccination requirements.
